Further Reflections

Oh, the hell with it. To those who read my recent rant on the wonderful world of blogging, and all the annoyances that come with it, I am glad to be providing a valuable service to those willing and eager to enjoy it. Therefore, I think it might be best to continue this blog and continue to drudge through the anonymous attacks, snobbery, and floods of EPK emails (which haven't ceased, mind you). These sort of things just make me despair, and it's hard to continue to be enthusiastic in light of some of these comments, on and off list.

To clarify: 433 RPM (owner of the otherwise fantastic No Longer Forgotten Music blog, though the straw that broke the camel's back below, is not the main reason for the previous rant. I still feel strongly against blogger entitlement and the inevitable repetition that comes with the territory. However, I will offer no apologies if something, without prior knowledge, is reposted. It's a big blog world out there, and there's no time to dig through everyone else's archives to see what has or hasn't been posted. It is important for both readers and bloggers to understand that we (bloggers ourselves), DO NOT own the copyright to music they post (which I'm aware opens me up to any criticism from anti-blogging factions), and otherwise, I have made efforts in the past to point in the proper direction should I be aware of an existing post on the subject. I try to offer a unique perspective on anything I post, digging up any found information, videos, and interesting tidbits wherever available, adding to the experience and appreciation.

So in short, Systems of Romance will most likely continue, so long as my personal interest in this kind of music does. I will do my best to keep up the efforts and post music not easily found both on and offline, in hopes that willing ears will continue to experience and support these very rare treats. I will, on the suggestions of several friends, be starting an 8tracks account for previewing purposes. In the meanwhile however, here's an explosion of cute:

I love the no-longer-forgotten- music blog. But, he does seem abit anal at times. I am sure he is entitled to a degree to be so. But, there is no copy claim when blogging music, unless you yourself made it. Period. Unless there is some un-spoken law inbetween the bloggers?

Hey Frankie T.,

I love the records you post on your blog. Don't get sucked into totalitarian firstie-fixation.

The music blogging community, especially those bloggers who, like you, specialize in out-of-print rarities, offer us all an amazing opportunity to connect with otherwise lost sounds. It may matter to the small-minded and territorial if two blogs coincidentally post the same record, but to the majority of appreciators it does not.

You go.

As a person born in Brooklyn myself, I say fuck 'em! Delete any comment the second you see it's not going to be friendly, and do what you want to do however you want to do it. Let your blog speak for itself, and if any self-defined scene rulers give you a hard time, tell them you don't want to be in their widdle klub.

I've done a site since 1997, and I've been telling naysayers to eat my poop ever since. Try it, you'll like it!

Man. you scared me with you last post. I love your blog and because of it, I can enjoy a lot of long lost gems that i've missed over my formidable years (and not have to take out a mortgage to buy them on eBay).

Thank you
Will

I wasn't aware that you were thinking of quitting, but am glad you aren't! I've been following this blog for the last half-year and discoverd so much awsome music I wouldn't have otherwise...

Repetition in posts between different blogs is not per se a bad thing, as different sites have different audiences : if it can mean better exposure for forgotten bands or great music, so much the better. As long as there is some kind of aknowledgment of the original poster and some new light shed on the subject, it is I think not only morally ok but also pertinent. We for example have reposted many things from Systems Of Romance over time, but as our blog is in French (different readers) and we always link back to here, it can only be in service of the music, which is why we all (should) do it in the first place.

Keep up the good work!

I really don't understand why the word 'copy right' came in. Not from me. I don't claim copy right (nor am I against it, but that's a different matter) for my posts. It would just be nice to see new things that nobody has ever heard (get them from soulseek for all I care) rather than things that are easy to find. so say you want to post this storung tape, isn't very easy to find through google that it has been posted? I am no internet wizzkid, rather the opposite, but that's what i do with thing I suspect that have been released. I would never say that someone should stop blogging, or use anything I posted for that matter, but it be nice to see my efforts be mentioned, that's merely all.

Thanks for your further thoughts on the matter. Essentially, I do try to be mindful of my peers in the blogosphere and keep a pretty good record of what's already been posted. I even made mention of it in the IKO post.

I was just noting, coincidentally enough, with curious guy of phoenix hairpins, that it's tough to check up on expansive backlogs from blogs such as yours and mutant sounds.

really what I'm getting at is that I will aim to seek out truly unheard gems, and already do, but sometimes, a little repetition, intentional or no, might still be useful to folks who are only familiar with this blog, or vice versa.

Otherwise, I do have some truly unique donations in the works. onwards and upwards, eh?

one last comment to 433 rpm: i just saw your recent post, and i just need to reiterate here that i did not pluck your release and download from your blog and simply repost it without giving you credit. i was fully unaware of your efforts, and received my copy of the live cassette from a different source. after reading your original post on the matter, i offer information you neglect, and vice versa. my aim is to tell a story, to link as many possible bits of information as i can, in hopes that potential listeners can gain a bit of perspective about the artist. i could argue that your post is mechanical and therefore, not enticing, and i aim, in part, to do the opposite. i didn't steal your words, and i didn't steal your post.

as georges posts above, i don't care as much if my own personal rips and efforts are shared with the world. that's the idea behind these blogs. you're not taking the ownership of copyright, but there's some strange sense of entitlement as the sole provider and therefore controller of the rip, and i don't understand or agree with it.

what it boils down to is this: the vast majority of the world could give a flying fuck about these records, these long forgotten bands that we all wish got the credit they deserved. our efforts should be united, to bring these forgotten gems to a new audience who otherwise wouldn't hear them.

all of us bloggers should ask ourselves: who does the blog serve? our own egos or the artists who deserve the exposure?

All I can say is that the two Voice live boots have been downloaded over two hundred times! Never would have guessed that so many people were interested...
Without ALL of you music bloggers there would be sooo much music never heard, and I thank you all for that.

I have to say also that I greatly appreciate the efforts of all the bloggers who have brought to light a whole lot of good music that has somehow been lost in the darkness of obscurity. Iam not sure how so many bands have been forgotten, or not mentioned in almost thirty years. I want to conclude by saying Iam sorry to have caused a little turmoil with soundhead earlier this year. It is all in a little fun. Anyone too uptight about things makes me want to loosen them up. Sometimes this only occurs after being wound as tightly as you can. Regardless, great job you are doing sir.

...since the music itself has been written/performed by others in the first place,
speaking about copyright under these terms,is way too far from the real point...
Re-posting is inevitable to happen in the wide wild world:
that is either by intention,or by "accident",or whatever...

However...it is way far more respected,
when people have spent lots of their valuable spare time,in order to clean the tape deck,
check the vinyl record for dust and artifacts,
take proper cover photos and/or scans etc etc...
Firing up slsk/torrent,adding a bunch of mp3s in the list,
then zipping and uploading them,
is way much less time consuming than the above,no question about that.

In both of the cases above though, the winners are the "forgotten and rare to find" artists:
they finally get the chance that they might didn't have back then...
to be widely recognized for all of the great music they made.
And "us" of course...the people who finally get the chance of hearing this wonderful music,
it's existence whom we might never have discovered,
no matter how deep we've digged on our own...

So,in order to sum up...besides that, what's the difference?
Simply put, that the "hard" way of ripping/scanning/sharing music,
certainly earns a way deepest respect to blog readers,
at least when speaking in the long term view...

One more comment...as I've seen quite a few bloggers lately complaining,
and claiming they will end their blogs because they got pissed about this,or about that etc etc...
Like they wanna attract attention upon them:is it about their "15 minutes of fame"?
Or do they feel that their blog is their ultimate spiritual child or so?
It's a virtual identity here in the net:
after a certain point,
no one really cares what a blogger might or might not do...
sadly,95% of people simply consume info "as is" after all,
meaning, merely one place less for free tech-food for them...
For me,someone shares music simply in order to make equally happy,
the rest 5% of the people that actually listens to the music,
instead of merely consuming "fetischism" and "underground culture"...
Regarding social networks and similar,
i strongly prefer my neighbourhood's pub...
cheap beer and post-punk - the "anal" way ;-)

Best wishes to all bloggers despite possibly different attitudes,
keep the spirit of sharing alive, that's all it counts...

I usually don't post things that I've found on other blogs unless I like it very much, assuming I can figure out where I got it from - which is getting harder & harder to do as I've got 300 GB of stuff I still need to back up that dates back two years in downloading. What's far more common for me is to post something from my own collection and offer links to other people's blogs where they can find more by the artist. I've done that with 433 RPM's blog more than once.

Copyright? Hahaha. I know some bloggers flip out when people repost even the same title - even if it's a fresh rip! - on my blog but I've discovered that most people are posting 128kbps rips, don't declick or include scans so if they complain (usually about my 320kbps files and 300 or 600 dpi scans) I just laugh at them. I'd like to believe that nobody seriously believes they own the copyrights on stuff they post.

The important thing is to relax, give credit where it's due because doing that builds friendships. Some blogs focus on only posting certain bands or running cult of personality blogs ("Look at me! Think about me! Me! Me! Me!) but I honestly think people just love to download music that seems like it'd be fun to listen to.

Other bloggers flip out when an artist asks to have material removed but I see that as just an awkward opportunity to get to know the artists. It's happened to me more than once and every time I've found that it isn't that they don't want to see their stuff shared, it's that they don't want some particular project shared. Sometimes they'll even give you stuff to post that NOBODY else has.

I love this sort of discussion! Bloggers don't run blogs like No Longer Forgotten Music, System of Romance or Dualtrack to make money, it's unpaid work that's done out of love for the stuff we share. We're just trying to make the internet a more interesting place.
